This is the build page of my current project for building a DIY 3D printer. I started looking at the Hypercube as a starting place, but quickly found additional sub projects that will be built into the final design, taking from both the Hypercube Evolution and HevORT projects.
I will say, there is no single place to find all this information and it requires a lot of reading, looking through Thingiverse, jumping on Facebook groups, and watching YouTube videos. I’m building this page in case people want to build what I have put together and have some steps to follow.
Goals
- Have a build volume that is 300x300x400 or larger
- Use a 32-bit system
- Use 3030 for increased stability
- Able to print PLA, PTEG, and flexible material
- Able to attach a laser in place of the hotend easily
- Self Leveling Bed
- 24v
- Direct Drive
Hypercube Evolution Worksheet
On the Hypercube Evolution thingiverse page, they have a spreadsheet to help you design and build a list of materials that are needed, along with the lengths of the frame you need, based upon your build area.
Here is a link to the one that I have been working out of. At this point, I’m only using it to get an idea of what size I need to cut my 3030 to. I also have a research BOM page in there.
Bill of Materials (BOM)
The BOM is a work in progress. If it shows up here, that means I have purchased it. There are a number of items that I know I’ll need regardless of other considerations.
Frame
Part Name | Quantity | Description | Notes |
---|---|---|---|
3030 Aluminum T-Slot Aluminum Extrusion – 1000m length | 9 | Aluminum T-Slot that you will need to cut to the correct sizes. | Even though you only need 9, the cheapest place to purchase them are on eBay, from ZYLtech, in a bundle of 10. |
Nema17 Stepper Motor | 6 |
Electronics
Part Name | Quantity | Description | Notes |
---|---|---|---|
BIGTREETECH SKR PRO V1.1 Controller Board | 1 | 32-bit controller board | You can purchase the Controller board and the TMC2209 stepper drivers in one package for cheaper than purchasing separately, from the Big Tree Tech store on aliexpress. |
TMC2209 | 6 | Stepper Driver | I’m planning on using the sensorless homing feature. |
BIGTREETECH TFT35 V3.0 Touch Screen | 1 | LCD Touch Screen | Integrates with the SKR Pro v1.1 controller board. |
Raspberry Pi 4 | 1 | I plan on running Octoprint to manage the printer. | |
BLTouch v3 | Try not to get a clone, many reports of bad results. | ||
24v 17A 400W Switching Power Supply |
